UC Health Memorial Hospital
The Future Of Roofing Is Seamless! ™
Key Points:
• Roof restoration for active hospital, including helicopter pad
• Challenges: Minimal disruption, emergency helicopter landings, paver removal
• Solution: Silicone coating system, manual paver removal, flexible work schedule
• Success factors: Effective communication, adaptability, minimal impact on operations
The UCHealth Memorial Hospital project in Colorado Springs presented us with a complex challenge of restoring the roof of an active healthcare facility, including the critical helicopter pad area. The existing roof was a modified bitumen system, and the client needed a solution that would avoid the risks and disruptions associated with a full roof replacement.
Our approach to this project prioritized minimal disruption to hospital operations, especially considering the sensitive nature of the helicopter pad. We proposed a liquid-applied silicone coating system with broadcast granules, which would provide a seamless, durable surface without the need for tear-off.
One of the most significant challenges was coordinating our work around emergency helicopter landings. We established a robust communication system with hospital security, allowing us to clear the roof within 10-15 minutes of receiving notice of an incoming helicopter. This required exceptional organization and flexibility from our team.
In addition to the coating application, the project involved the removal of 964 concrete pavers, each weighing 40 pounds. Instead of using a crane, which would have interfered with helicopter operations, we devised a manual removal process. This involved carefully transporting the pavers through the building using elevators, showcasing our ability to adapt our methods to the unique constraints of the site.
The success of this project demonstrated our capacity to work effectively in high-stakes environments where safety and operational continuity are paramount. Our innovative approach not only met the client's roofing needs but also respected the critical nature of hospital operations, earning us high praise from the project manager.
