The Future Of Roofing Is Seamless! ™
Key Points:
• Roof restoration for US Space Force facility
• Challenges: Working around sensitive equipment, high foot traffic, energy efficiency
• Solution: Silicone coating system with embedded granules over existing TPO
• Success factors: Innovative approach, minimal disruption, improved performance
The US Space Force project presented us with a unique and challenging opportunity to work on a highly sensitive military installation. The existing roof consisted of ISO insulation, cover board, and a TPO (Thermoplastic Polyolefin) membrane. Initially, the Space Force construction officers were considering a simple membrane swap, replacing the existing TPO with an EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) rubber membrane.
However, upon careful assessment of the situation, we proposed a more innovative and efficient solution. Instead of replacing the membrane, we recommended restoring the existing TPO roof using a liquid-applied silicone coating system with embedded granules. This approach offered several advantages over the original plan.
One of the main challenges of this project was working around the numerous antennas and equipment on the roof, which were critical for the facility's operations. Our solution allowed for minimal disruption to these systems. Additionally, we had to consider the frequent foot traffic on the roof for maintenance of these systems. The granule-embedded coating provided excellent durability and slip resistance for maintenance personnel.
The coating system we applied not only extended the life of the existing roof but also improved its reflectivity and energy efficiency. This was a significant improvement over the initially proposed black EPDM membrane, which would have increased heat absorption and energy costs.
Our ability to provide a value-engineered solution that addressed all of the client's needs while improving upon the original specifications showcased our expertise in military roofing projects. The success of this project further solidified our reputation as a go-to contractor for complex, high-security installations.
